Early August was not the time of year we preferred to conduct our first “Big Dig” in the Arizona sunshine, but opportunity knocked.

The specimen pictured above weighs over 1500 pounds and is an example of the stock we collected at the Purple Passion Mine near Wickenburg AZ during our Big Dig event.

These boulders are a unique mix of minerals that fluoresce vividly under ultraviolet light.  The calcite fluoresces brilliant red under shortwave UV, and is interlaced with striations of green willemite. The calcite also fluoresces scarlet under mid-wave.  The willemite fluoresces green to yellow green under shortwave UV and phosphoresces the same colors long after the UV lamp has been turned off.  The fluorite fluoresces best under mid- and long- wavelengths as a bright blue/violet  color.  The aragonite fluoresces light blue to white under shortwave, and phosphoresces white.
